Doctoral student in the area of medical statistics

We are looking for a PhD candidate to join the SPICES research team. SPICES is the acronym of ‘Scaling-up Packages of Interventions for Cardiovascular disease prevention in selected sites in Europe and Sub-Saharan Africa: an implementation research project’ and is a EU Horizon 2020 funded project. The project is coordinated by the Department of Primary and Interdisciplinary care (ELIZA) in collaboration with the Department of Epidemiology and Social Medicine (ES0C) and the Global Health Institute.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of mortality worldwide, variably accounting for more than 50 % of deaths in Europe and some three-quarters of all deaths in developing countries. By 2030, it has been estimated that cardiovascular disease will be responsible for more deaths than all infectious, nutritional, maternal and perinatal diseases in developing countries put together. And yet it is preventable. The SPICES project aims to implement and evaluate a comprehensive set of evidence based interventions for the primary prevention of CVDs at the community level in five countries (Belgium, France, Uganda, UK, South Africa).

Job description

  • You prepare a doctoral thesis in the field of prevention of cardiovascular diseases.
  • You will be part of the scientific team running the SPICES project in Belgium. In that role you will:

    • be responsible for the quantitative evaluation of the SPICES interventions;
    • support data management in collaboration with the data manager;
    • support the health economic analyses;
    • participate in and contribute to the overall project progress.

  • You contribute to the quantitative evaluation of the whole project (cross-setting).
  • As an academic, you supervise master and master after master theses.
  • As a researcher, you assist in attracting external research funding from the private and public sector on national as well as international level.
  • You publish scientific articles related to the research project to which the appointment is made.
  • You follow a doctoral school programme at the University of Antwerp.

Profile and requirements

  • You hold a master degree in statistics (or epidemiology with experience in quantitative and statistical analysis).
  • Also students in the final year of their degree can apply.
  • Your academic qualities comply with the requirements stipulated in the university’s policy .
  • Experience with cardiovascular research is an added value.
  • Knowledge of or experience with health economics is an added value.
  • You have knowledge of specific software (R,, SAS).
  • Strong interest in scientific work; flexible, autonomous, excellent communication and interpersonal skills; strong sense of initiative and responsibility; being interested and able to work in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Excellent knowledge of English, both oral and written.
  • You are quality-oriented, conscientious, creative and cooperative.

We offer

  • a doctoral scholarship for a period of two years, with the possibility of an additional year after positive evaluation;
  • the start date of the position will be between 1 March 2019 and 15 April 2019;
  • a gross monthly grant ranging from 2.373,36 - 2.516,73;
  • a dynamic and stimulating work environment.
