PhD candidate position in experimental nonlinear acoustics

PhD position (joint doctorate) with research focus on nonlinear acoustics and contact mechanics

The proposed research program is a continuationof our efforts in nondestructive testing (NDT) of solids based on contactacoustical nonlinearity, i.e. highly nonlinear behavior of defects (cracks, delaminations)that helps detect them. Purely experimental development is combined withtheoretical modeling that uses so-called semi-analytical models in contactmechanics integrated into FEM environment. As a result, we have a simulationthat describes wave propagation, vibrations, thermal effects in a samplecontaining frictional cracks. The principal project objective is to establishtheory and experiment agreement in nonlinear acoustic and/or thermoacousticNDT. This should allow us to estimate parameters of defects from measured data.

We look for a candidate for a 4-years PhD candidate position in ultrasound nondestructive testing and numerical modeling. The project is to stimulate collaboration between two major scientific organizations located in the north of France and in Belgium, Université Lille Nord Europe and KU Leuven, leading to a prestigious PhD diploma from Ecole Centale de Lille and KU Leuven (joint doctorate). The position is based in Lille, FR with frequent travels to Kortrijk, BE.

Your skills:

  • Knowledgeof acoustic experimentation
  • Skills innumerical simulations (finite elements, finite differences, programming) and insignal processing
  • GoodEnglish is mandatory

Your job:

  • ACOUSTIC MEASUREMENTS (nonlinear ultrasound, vibrations, thermosonics)
  • Participationin manufacturing samples with calibrated/engineered defects
  • Contributeto the creation of a modeling support tool: develop and use finite element codefor wave propagation and vibrations, develop frictional contact models
