Post-doctoral researcher in advanced electron ptychography development and application

This position, within the group of Prof. Timothy Pennycook, will make use of Timepix3 event driven camera technology which enables extremely fast microsecond dwell time 4D STEM data collection. We aim to harness this speed in conjunction with the very high dose efficiency of ptychographic to significantly enhance our ability to image beam sensitive materials at high resolution. This runs the gamut from defects in 2D materials to metal organic frameworks to cryoEM of biological proteins. In addition to low doses the aim is also to use the sensitivity of ptychography to image local electromagnetic fields and charge densities, including detecting subtle changes due bonding between individual atoms. This is a computationally intense microscopy project and thus skills in both high-end STEM and computation are desired. Experience in programming, algorithm development, 4D STEM and electron ptychography, STEM image simulations, and density functional theory are all desirable.

Research group

EMAT is one of the leading electron microscopy centers in the world and has a vast expertise in both fundamental and applied electron microscopy. EMAT has several state of the art electron microscopes including three aberration corrected, high end ThermoFisher Scientific-Titan instruments, a dual beam FIB, an environmental SEM, and multiple pixelated direct electron detectors for 4DSTEM including a microsecond dwell time capable Timepix3 camera.   • The successful candidate will work on the development and optimization of the acquisition and processing of data for electron ptychography.
  • You will work on both low dose imaging and high precision imaging applications in materials science, physics, and biology.
  • You will have the opportunity to supervise students.
  • You publish scientific articles related to the research project of the assignment.
  • You present your work at national and international workshops and conferences.


  • You hold a PhD degree in physics, materials science, computing, transmission electron microscopy or other related field.
  • The ideal candidate would have significant expertise and understanding in both high end experimental scanning transmission electron microscopy and computer coding and processing.
  • You are enthusiastic and greatly interested in the development and application of electron microscopy.
  • You can submit outstanding academic results.
  • You are highly motivated, quality-oriented, conscientious, creative and cooperative.
  • Your research qualities are in line with the faculty and university research policies .

  • Your gross monthly salary is calculated according to the pay scale for a principal research fellow in the Contract Research Staff category (Dutch: Bijzonder Academisch Personeel, BAP).
