Department: Department of Bioscience Engineering Regime Full-time

Let’s shape the future - University of Antwerp

The University of Antwerp is a dynamic, forward-thinking, European university. We offer an innovative academic education to more than 20 000 students, conduct pioneering scientific research and play an important service-providing role in society. We are one of the largest, most international and most innovative employers in the region. With more than 6000 employees from 100 different countries, we are helping to build tomorrow's world every day. Through top scientific research, we push back boundaries and set a course for the future – a future that you can help to shape.

The Department of Bioscience Engineering in the Faculty of Sciences is looking for a full-time (100%) Postdoctoral fellow, domain spectro(bio)electrochemistry (2 years)

The A-Sense Lab at the University of Antwerp has an open position for a postdoc to strengthen our developments in the field of spectro(bio)electrochemistry.

The project requires a combination of approaches including electrochemistry, protein biochemistry, and spectroscopy. The selected candidate will join a productive and collaborative research group at UAntwerpen, coordinated by Prof. Karolien De Wael, who is spearheading international research on electrochemistry. The project runs in collaboration with Prof. Filip Meysman who is spearheading the international research on microbial electricity and coordinates the Center of Excellence on Microbial Systems Technology. The project targets the characterisation of a radically new class of conductive biomolecules, obtained from recently discovered cable bacteria (see ?" target="_blank" rel="nofollow"> for more information). These long bacteria harbour a conductive fiber network in that transports electrical currents in comparable way to copper wiring. The highly conductive fibers enable a completely new interface between biology and electronics, providing a promising prospect for new materials and technology. The goal is to characterize these conductive biomolecules through spectroelectrochemistry in order to achieve a deeper understanding of this new form of biological electron transport.
