This year, Ghent University has no less than 25 researchers with Highly Cited status. This is another fine recognition of the quality of its publications and their scientific impact.
Clarivate Web of Science has been compiling this exclusive list every year since 2001, based on the highest number of top publications. In order to be recognized as a ’highly cited researcher’, a scientist must have a major impact on the work of fellow scientists.
Cross field
The list is categorized by discipline, but there is also a cross-field category.
For this year, the following Ghent University researchers are Highly Cited Researchers in this category: Yvan Saeys and Peter Vandenabeele* (Faculty of Science), Tom Coenye (Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences), Guy Smagghe, Thomas Van Leeuwen and Willy Verstraete (Faculty of Bioscience Engineering).
Plant & Animal Science
Ghent University’s pioneering role in the field of Plant & Animal Science is also evident from the list of most cited scientists. Tom Beeckman*, Wout Boerjan*, Dirk Inzé*, Alain Goossens*, Frank Van Breusegem*, Yves Van de Peer* and Klaas Vandepoele* renewed their earlier recognition.
Also on the list for Ghent University, but as a secondary affiliation, is Jiri Friml.
Their specific expertise covers a wide range from plant biotechnology to biostatistics - often with a strongly interdisciplinary approach.
Immunology
Within medical medicine, the scientists in the field of Immunology are proving their growing reputation. Bart Lambrecht*, Hamida Hammad*, Martin Guilliams* and Mohamed Lamkanfi* can once again call themselves Highly Cited Researchers in this category.
Claus Bachert (Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences) is added to the list.
Psychiatry and Psychology
This year, for the first time, Ghent University provides names for the domain of Psychiatry & Psychology with the following researchers from the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences: Marc Brysbaert, Bart Soenens and Maarten Vansteenkiste.
Geosciences
Geosciences also appears in the Ghent University list for the first time. Diego Miralles (Faculty of Bioscience Engineering) is the researcher involved.
Social Sciences
Ilse De Bourdeaudhuij is once again recognized as a Highly Cited Researcher in Social Sciences, and is joined by Greet Cardon (both Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences) - both outstanding in the field of movement sciences.
The 3 countries with the largest number of Highly Cited Researchers are the United States, China and the United Kingdom.
