The Vrije Universiteit Brussel is launching a new English-taught one-year Master’s programme in Applied Informatics. Students can choose to focus either on Artificial Intelligence or on Big Data. The programme is organised by the Faculty of Sciences and Bioengineering Sciences and will start in the academic year 2023-2024. With this new programme, VUB also expands its offer for working students and lifelong learning.
Artificial intelligence and big data technology are gaining importance, both in industry and in general life. It is therefore necessary to train both new and existing ICT employees in these domains. It is no coincidence that VUB’s new programme in Applied Informatics will be taught in English as ICT is an inherently international field. With this English-taught variant of the programme, VUB does not only target local, Dutch-speaking students, but also wishes to attract an international audience.
"We note there is a growing interest worldwide in big data technology and artificial intelligence (AI). VUB established the first AI laboratory in continental Europe in 1984 and is still internationally important in this research field," says Steven Van Luchene, head of Educational Quality and Innovation. "So we want to translate and apply this expertise for students who are looking for an intensive practical training that will prepare them for employment in the Flemish, Belgian and especially the internationally oriented AI sector of companies, industry and services."
Lifelong learning
The Master of Science in Applied Informatics also caters to the needs of working students as itis offered through both conventional and evening classes, with parts of the course available via distance learning. A wide range of instructional techniques such as group and individual projects, seminars, workshops and research training will be used.
