If so, consider our offer: a post-doctoral research position in the Agricultural and Development Economics Research Group of Prof. dr. Miet Maertens at the Division of Bio-economics, Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, KU Leuven in Belgium!

 

In this position, you will develop your own research agenda on issues related to agri-food trade and global food systems; supply chain modernization; agricultural transformation; rural labor markets and rural development; or female empowerment and gender. You will workout own research ideas and co-develop research proposals. You will be involved in the supervision of ongoing PhD research on the above topics. We currently have 15 PhD researchers in our group. Most of them are collecting their own farm and household survey data, in various countries around the world, and use quantitative and econometric techniques. Your own experience in collecting or analyzing such data would be an advantage. You will be involved in the management and organization of our research group, and in the coordination of several ongoing research projects. We currently collaborate with several EU partners and with universities in Africa (Ethiopia, Senegal, South-Africa,Uganda) and Latin-America (Ecuador, Peru). Hence, your work will involve some travelling and will require some flexibility. Depending on your own interest,we offer you the possibility to engage in teaching activities in Master-level courses on agricultural, food and natural resource economics, organized at the Faculty of Bio-science Engineering. Your involvement could range from supporting developing course material, correcting student assignments, attending to exercise sessions, guiding MSc thesis students to teaching complete course modules. 

 

You will work at the Division of Bio-economics, Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, Faculty of Bio-science Engineering, KU Leuven in collaboration with the research group of Prof. dr. Ir. Miet Maertens. Our research group currently includes people from 7 different nationalities; people with a background in economics, bio-science engineering and agricultural sciences.

  • You hold a PhD degree in Bio-science Engineering, Agricultural Economics, Development Economics, Natural Resources Economics or another relevant field of Applied Economics or Bio-science Engineering.
  • You have a starting track record of scientific journal publications. 
  • You have a keen interest in scientific research on global food systems, food supply chains, rural labor markets and rural development in low-income countries, and more generally in the research topics of the Division of Bio-economics (?url=www.ees.kuleuven.be%2Fbioecon&module=jobs&id=1752" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">www.ees.kuleuven.be/bioecon). 
  • You are proficient in English; your knowledge of French and/or Dutch might come in handy.
  • You are skilled in statistical, econometric and quantitative data analysis and you have experience with statistical packages (preferably stata). 
  • You have experience with field research in developing countries, and with household or farm-survey data collection and analysis. 
  • Your experience with graduate or undergraduate teaching in the field of agricultural, natural resource and/or development economics could be an advantage. 
  • You are flexible to travel abroad for field research, meetings, workshops or conferences. 
  • You are in general a flexible, dynamic and sociable person; you are persistent and problem-solving oriented; you are able to work independently as well as in a team; and you are interested to work in a multi-cultural environment.
