PhD candidate

Master of pharmaceutical sciences, biomedical sciences, veterinary sciences, bioscience engineering or medicine.

Job description

The neurogenetics team is looking for a highly motivated PhD candidate for a project focusing on TDP-43-mediated neurodegeneration. TDP-43 proteinopathy plays a crucial role in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and frontotemporal dementia but the pathogenic mechanisms remain poorly understood. Within this project, you will be involved in a detailed characterization of a novel genetic defect in the gene coding for TDP-43 leading to an unusual clinical phenotype. You will use patient samples, CRISPR/Cas9-modified iPSCs and Drosophila models. Techniques will include genetic screening, RNA-seq, proteomics, Western blotting, PCR, immunohostochemistry and single-cell genomics/transcriptomics.

Profile of the candidate

The candidate should have a strong interest in genetics of neurodegenerative disease, good communication and writing skills (English), and should be able to work independently, as well as function as part of a team.

How to apply

We offer a position for 1 year with the possibility of extension for 4 years in case of a positive FWO/BOF application. The candidate will have to apply for an FWO PhD-fellowship in February 2020. Please send your letter of motivation and curriculum vitae to Prof. Dr. Bart Dermaut ( bart.dermaut [at] ugent[.]be ) before June 10, 2019.
