Postdoctoral researcher

Job description

This job comprises 2 sub-functions:

Microbiological study (supervisor Prof Veerle Fievez): Within this function, a new project aims at generating new data and integrating data of a project which already has been running for 2 years. Within this former project, various components were tested by means of in vitro incubations for their capacity to reduce methane by inhibiting micro-organisms in the rumen. Additional compounds, provided by the same industrial partner as during the former project, are tested and results of the current and former project are reported and published together. Accordingly, this is a short-term project (1 year, 50%) to finalize the in vitro screening and publish the results.

Fatty acids in animal products (supervisor Prof Stefaan De Smet): Within this function, fatty acid profiles are analysed and interpreted in comparison with required enrichment levels for acquiring specific enrichment labels. This is a short-term project to temporarily facilitate the transition for these service activities upon retirement of the responsible ATP staff member. After this transition phase, a replacement (ATP member with an open-ended contract linked to the laboratory) should have been adequately trained. This too is a short-term project (1 year, 50%).

Profile of the candidate

The candidate can be employed immediately for carrying out the described assignments. This implies:
  • a thorough knowledge of the microbial processes in the rumen that give rise to methane production,
  • experience in performing and interpreting in vitro simulations of microbial metabolism in the rumen,
  • experience with performing fatty acid analyses on animal feed and animal products,
  • be able to independently interpret fatty acid chromatograms and to transfer this knowledge in a didactic way
  • be able to independently set up experiments in a scientifically correct manner, to process results statistically, to interpret and to report in English.
