In the framework of a research collaboration with JANSSEN PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANIES OF JOHNSON & JOHNSON in Beerse (Belgium), the research team ORGANIC SYNTHESIS of the Department of Chemistry announces the availability of a full time postdoctoral position:
Job description: As an employee of the research team Organic Synthesis of the Department of Chemistry you will be working full time in the Drug Chemistry group at Johnson & Johnson. As part of the department for analytical development, you will focus on performing mechanistic studies to investigate, predict, and mitigate chemical drug degradation processes. To be able to propose adequate countermeasures (e.g. using antioxidants, metal scavengers), you will investigate decomposition routes of APIs and study the degradants in terms of their nature, root cause, kinetics as well as their impact on product shelf life. Some of these degradants require synthesis. Your work will also involve basic research to develop novel strategies of studying and predicting drug degradation in a systematic way. Finally, you will perform forced degradation studies to support current projects of the Drug Chemistry group at Johnson & Johnson. Hence, your work will directly contribute to the successful development of stable, safe and robust products. It is expected that your work will result in at least one publication in a peer-reviewed journal.
Your Profile: The ideal candidate for this position will have a PhD in organic chemistry with experience or affinity with the study of reaction mechanisms/kinetics, HPLC/UPLC and structural characterization of organic molecules. It is an asset to be familiar with at least one tool to study chemical reactions, such as e.g. EPR, electroanalysis, modelling, DoE. The ability to work in a team as well as good communication/writing skills and a good mastery of the English language is essential.
Additional info: The University of Antwerp offers you a contract of 1 year which can be extended. The salary is based on the scale of “Doctor-assistent” as defined by the Flemish government. Relevant experience will be taken into account. The selected candidate is expected to start ASAP. The research scheduled is linked to two on-going EU Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI) projects.
