Description:

Atom Probe Tomography (APT) is a state-of-the-art analytical method that allows for three-dimensional elemental mapping with near atomic resolution. It is a powerful tool that can provide unique compositional information on a variety of materials systems such as complex alloys, semiconductor materials and devices, and ceramic materials. Due to its outstanding spatial resolution (Δx ≈ Δy ≈ 0.2 nm and Δz ≈ 0.1 nm) and detection sensitivity (element concentrations down to a few ppm can be detected irrespective of elemental mass) it provides information essential for understanding structure-property relationships of complex materials and understanding atomic-scale phenomena such as solute segregation or clustering that may control local phase transformations and resulting material properties.

Tasks :

  • develop a practical APT reconstruction method that reconstructs a nano-sample composed of millions of atoms
  • employ state-of-the art computational techniques (e.g. deep learning) to decrease reconstruction time.


Qualifications:

Applicants are expected to hold a PhD ?n physics, mathematics, computer science, or engineering. Excellent programming skills and communication in English ?r? key assets. Expertise ?n tomographic image reconstruction or inverse problems is a plus.

Labs involved:

The Vision Lab is a research group of the physics department at the University of Antwerp. The Vision Lab has unique expertise in the development of algorithms for reconstruction, processing and analysis of tomographic imaging data. Application domains are x-ray computed tomography (CT), MRI and electron tomography. The working environment is strongly interdisciplinary, combining techniques and insights from physics, mathematics, engineering, and computer science. The Vision Lab has a broad range of national and international collaborations with both academic and industrial partners.
