Post-doctoral research position on Computer Vision for Animal Behaviour Analysis

Is computer vision your passion? Like to work with animals? Join our research groups as a Post-Doc and fuse these interests to become a future leader in the rapidly growing field quantitative animal behaviour analysis.

At M3-BIORES we believe that Computer Vision will be an important technology to improve health and welfare of companion, zoo and farm animals. Currently M3-BIORES is looking for a talented Post-Doctoral researcher with expertise in, and flair for, the field of Computer Vision and a keen interest in developing algorithms for animal behaviour analysis. Our research team will start exciting projects in this field and are interested to find a person with strong leadership charachteristics to help us in the coordination, development and exploitation of state-of-the-art image analysis approaches for identifying and tracking animals, as well as detecting important behaviours (e.g. grooming, fighting, eating, foraging). The right candidate will also exploit extracted information to enable end-users (researchers, animal care-takers) understand and manage animals in ways that go beyond the state-of-the-art practices.

Duties and responsibilities:

Working collaboratively with the research team leader and team to produce excellent research results and realize a vision for computer vision and animal behaviour analysis

Deliver excellent image processing solutions to industry partner within agreed time constraints

Write reports and research papers, and present findings to collaborators and scientific community

Demonstrate effective collaboration skills with high standard of personal integrity & handling of confidentiality

Define new research and development opportunities for the research team and assist in the writing of research proposals

Animal & Human Health Engineering (A2H) is a division within the Department of Biosystems at KU Leuven. A2H is transdisciplinary team of researchers, performing cutting-edge research to improve health, welfare and productivity for individual living organisms. The research group Measure, Model & Manage Bioresponses (M3-BIORES) sits within A2H and is a recognized scientific group working in the field of biological responses modelling and monitoring for improving the lives of animal and humans. Our objective is to measure and model in real-time the responses of living organisms as a basis for developing monitoring and controlling technology to improve their well-being, health and/or performance.

You have a vision to become an international expert in the field of Computer Vision applied to animal behaviour analysis. The field of computer vision for animal behaviour analysis is rapidly expanding, meanwhile the field faces important technical challenges. We are looking for someone who will face these challenges head-on and find new solutions. We will enable, support and collaborate with you in your pursuit of your vision.                                 

You are an excellent scientist and have experience in designing and running research projects to a high standard. A post-doc in our team carries important   responsibilities including managing projects and guiding junior researchers. This requires a drive to deliver excellent results (demonstrated with publications and implementable technology) in your own research coupled with the desire to help support junior researchers to be the best they can be. This requires a can-do attitude, a good eye for detail, work collaboratively and be unforgiving towards mediocre results.

You are an excellent collaborator within multi-disciplinary teams and you communicate effectively to deliver high quality science. Our strength is in our team, and our team is multidisciplinary with experts from domains of Animal Ethology, Veterinary, Mathematics, Bio-Engineering, Computer Science. This mix of backgrounds stimulates the generation of innovative ideas and interesting discussions and drives us to achieve impact with our science. Good communication within and outside our team is essential.

You are experienced in data analysis and computer vision algorithm design with state-of-the-art and traditional methodologies, and understand how to balance performance with complexity to achieve implementable technologies. Our team works with industry and utilises real-world data and aim to develop implementable solutions for our partners. We believe that only this way can we achieve technology that impacts the real-world.

You are creative individual and have a "persistent itch" to develop innovative solutions. Our team looks to translate novel technologies and ideas to enable scientific and industrial breakthroughs. Post-docs in our team have a key role in this process.

Requirements

Working knowledge in the field of data analysis, machine learning and algorithm development

Working knowledge on video processing with Python, and MATLAB, and deep learning frameworks

Knowledge on the development of novel cutting-edge computer vision technologies relevant for animal behaviour analysis (e.g. multi-object detection/segmentation/tracking etc.)

Strong analytical skills with the ability to collect, organize, analyse, and disseminate significant amounts of information with attention to detail and accuracy

Knowledge on experimental design and practical implementation of monitoring solution in commercial environments

Analytical,structured and result-oriented; you are able to work independently and make decisions without direct supervision involvement; you have excellent work organization and communication skills

Highly self-motivated, flexible, logical thinking, goal-oriented, team player; Continuously searching for new knowledge and for continuous improvement; demonstrated ability to learn new technologies and skills

Experience in building AI applications in embedding system (e.g. NVIDIA Jetson) would be a plus

Experience in managing multidisciplinary research project and guiding junior researchers
