EffSep, Efficient separation of macroconstituents from biomass by combining unit operations based on insights in structural organization, is an SBO-project (Strategic Basic Research project) involving eight research groups: four at Ghent University, three at KU Leuven, and one at UHasselt. It will house six PhD candidates and one full-time postdoc. The project aims to obtain a clear mechanistic insight on the impact of unit operations, used for the stabilization, disruption and extraction of constituents of the biomass, on cell wall disruption and cellular organization of the biomass. The results will contribute to generate new fundamental knowledge on how and which unit operations can be used to obtain the best extraction efficiency of macroconstituents with a defined functionality and stability.
PhD position within the project
In this specific PhD-project, the objective is to obtain functional protein from biomasses for their use as food ingredients. Research work will focus on innovative combinations of unit operations to extract proteins from different biomass sources and to test the impact of the extraction technology on the protein functionality. As these biomasses are highly susceptible towards deterioration, stabilization techniques are needed not hampering later extraction technologies or affecting the (technological/functional) quality of the extracted macroconstituents. The work will be carried out partly at the research unit VEG-i-TEC, Department of Food Technology, Safety and Health (Ghent University - Campus Kortrijk) and at the Laboratory of Food Chemistry and Biochemistry (KU Leuven).
Profile of the candidate
Background in food chemistry, food technology, or in extraction technologies of biomolecules
Willingness to work at interdisciplinary boundaries, in close collaboration with the other project members
We can offer a fully funded PhD position for a period of four years, subject to meeting the requirements and deadlines set out by the supervisors and the Doctoral school.
