The Department of Applied Linguistics / Translation and Interpreting in the Faculty of Arts has the following full-time (100%) vacancy:

Principal research fellow in the field of Interpreting Studies French-Dutch.

Position

As a principal research fellow, you will be part of the academic assistant staff (Dutch: Assisterend Academisch Personeel, AAP). You will spend at least 50% of your working time on academic research. In addition, you will actively contribute to education and service activities.

Research

• You will carry out high-quality academic research in the field of Interpreting Studies (interpreting from French into Dutch).
• You will report on the results of your research and produce academic publications.
• You will assist in the coordination of ongoing research projects and the activities of the research group.
• You will contribute to attracting national and international research funding.
• You will supervise PhD candidates in the preparation of their PhD theses.
• Your research is in line with the profile and vision of the TricS research group.

Education

• You will provide support with teaching and also teach high-quality academic classes yourself in the field of interpreting (consecutive and simultaneous interpreting) French-Dutch and Interpreting Studies:
  • Interpreting competence French-Dutch (3BA, 1163FLWTTA, 3 credits)
  • Consecutive interpreting French-Dutch and Dutch-French (partim French-Dutch, MA Interpreting, 2011FLWTOL, 6 credits)
  • Simultaneous interpreting French-Dutch (MA Interpreting, 2030FLWTOL, 3 credits)
  • Interpreting Studies (MA Interpreting, 2025FLWTOL, 3 credits)
  • You will also assist in teaching Interpreting Techniques (MA Interpreting, 2023FLWTOL, 6 credits, partim remote interpreting).
• You will supervise students and their Bachelor and Master dissertations.
• Your teaching role will evolve along with the study programmes.

Services

• You will play an active role in the academic and societal service provision of the TricS research group and the department of Applied Linguistics / Translation and Interpreting.

Profile

• You hold a PhD in Translation Studies, (Applied) Linguistics, Languages and Literatures or equivalent, with an interpreting studies-related topic (or you will have obtained it by the time you start work).
• Your research qualities are in line with the faculty and university research policies . You have relevant research experience in the field of Interpreting Studies. Research on the use of technology in interpreting would be an asset.
• Experience in writing and carrying out research projects would be an asset.
• An international network in Interpreting Studies would be an asset.
• Your teaching competences are in line with the University of Antwerp’s educational vision . Relevant teaching experience in the field of interpreting (consecutive and simultaneous) French-Dutch and Interpreting Studies would be an advantage.
• You are a native speaker of Dutch or equivalent and you have an excellent proficiency in Dutch, both oral and written. If you are not a native speaker of Dutch, you can demonstrate a CEFR C2 level of proficiency in Dutch before you take on teaching duties. You have a CEFR C1 level of proficiency in French.
• Experience in supervising students’ Bachelor and Master dissertations would be an asset.
• You are able to carry out your work and achieve your objectives with a high degree of independence.
• You are motivated to work actively on your further professional development. In this, you can make use of a wide range of training courses and professionalisation opportunities .
• You act with attention to quality, integrity, creativity and cooperation.
• A master’s degree or postgraduate certificate in simultaneous interpreting would be an asset.
• Professional experience as an interpreter and a network of partners in public and private sectors would be an asset.

What we offer

• We offer an appointment as a principal research fellow for a period of three years. Following a positive evaluation, the appointment can be renewed once.
• Your gross monthly salary is calculated according to the pay scale for a principal research fellow (academic assistant staff, AAP).
• The planned start date is 15 September 2021.
