New software, developed at KU Leuven, can use brain waves to determine whether a person understands speech well. The researchers were able to successfully apply the technology for the first time to young, hearing-impaired children.
In Flanders, one in a thousand infants come into the world with a severe hearing loss. Another as many children develop a hearing problem in the first years of life. Add to that the milder hearing loss, and about five percent of young children will need a hearing aid temporarily or permanently in at least one of both ears.
