Inleiding: On 15-17 October 2019, Prof Koen de Feyter (UAntwerp) participated in an expert meeting to elaborate a draft legally binding instrument on the right to development that took place on the 15th floor of the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
The drafting committee consisted of Mihir Kanade (chair), Makane Mbengue, Diane Desierto, Margarette May Macaulay and Koen De Feyter. The meeting was organised by the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights; Bat-Erden Ayush and Richard Lapper of the Right to Development Section also attended.
The committee duly completed a draft treaty which will now be shared with further experts for comments.
The text will be presented by Ambassador Zamir Akram, the Chairperson-Rapporteur of the open-ended intergovernmental working group on the right to development of the UN Human Rights Council as the zero draft of the right to development convention at its up-coming meeting in April 2020 in Geneva. Ambassador Zamir Akram also attended the meeting in New York.
