CESAER is the European association of more than 50 leading, specialized and comprehensive universities of science and technology that champion excellence in higher education, training, research and innovation.
From 17 to 19 October 2019, leaders representing universities of Science and Technology have gathered in Paris to address the challenges of education, research and innovation in the 21st century.
During the conference, the 32 nd General Assembly of the CESAER has elected Rik Van de Walle, rector of Ghent University, as the new President.
It is the beginning of an important international chapter for Ghent University:
"In the chairmanship role, Ghent University is gaining more visibility in Brussels and Europe, both among policy makers and higher education institutions. It offers us the opportunity to put certain themes on the European agenda that are important to Ghent University and fellow CESAER members. With this presidency, my main purpose will be to cooperate constructively in shaping the European research and education policy. The ultimate goal is to create better conditions for European funding." Rik Van de Walle.
Tackling the societal challenges of the 21st Century, such as climate change and ensuring citizens’ health, wellbeing and security, will be important themes the coming years:
" Economical, ecological and social sustainability is one of the three themes I would like to prioritize for the Presidency in the coming two years. Sustainability is high on the global and the European agenda and research, education and innovation play vital roles in the systemic changes needed to attain the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals." Rik Van de Walle.
In addition, the new president of CESAER, Rik Van de Walle, wants to emphasize the importance of cooperation between Science and Technology on the one hand and Social Sciences and Humanities on the other. A final point of attention will be an clear focus on the innovative technologies for the 21st century (artificial intelligence, biotechnology, quantum technology) and their impact on society.
For all three horizontal themes, CESAER will continuously investigate the possibilities to work together with other partners.
Rik Van de Walle has been elected for a two year term from 2020 to 2021.
