Junk-food has negative effects on the gut microbiota of urban birds

The specificities of life in cities can induce a number of modifications in urban-dwelling animal populations, which include changes in body size, physiology and behaviour.

Researchers from the University of Antwerp (Erik Matthysen and Aimeric Teyssier, Global Change Ecology Centre, research group Evolutionary Ecology), together with colleagues from Ghent (Norraine Salleh Hudin, Luc Lens en Liesbeth De Neve) and Toulouse (Jol White), now show that urban habitats also impact the gut bacteria of sparrows.
