On March 27nd, Her Majesty the Queen Mathilde visited the Global Campus of Ghent University as a part of a four-day state visit.

The queen attended an academic conference on circular economy, sustainable mobility and climate change. Ghent University’s rector, Rik Van de Walle, opened the seminar and was followed by a keynote speech by former UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon, who emphasized the importance of Ghent University’s presence in South-Korea.

"Ghent University is one of the world’s leading universities and the first European university in Korea. I am confident that students here will be equipped to be thinkers and doers that can tackle the challenges of the future", Ban Ki-moon at the start of the Belgium-Korea Seminar.

Meet & greet

After the seminar, Queen Mathilde took the time to exchange views with both Belgian students in Korea as well as Korean students of the Ghent University Global Campus.

"It was quite an honor to have the queen visit our campus. She was calm and confident and she helped us overcome our nervousness. She asked us about the sustainability goals and wanted to emphasize the importance of education. She stayed much longer than planned, she clearly wanted to have a thorough conversation with us. We talked for about an hour and we were really impressed." Students of Ghent University Global Campus Jeongtek Kim and Petra Roznar.
