Breaking boundaries: Silvia, a Woman in Science

"I am Silvia. I am a woman in science.

I am the manager of the Bioincubator, the only start-up incubator dedicated to Healthtech and offering shared, equipped lab space, in Luxembourg.

My interest in science began early at school.  I am passionate about Biochemistry and completed my PhD at Imperial College London.

I studied science and I think like a scientist in my everyday life. However, my career path took unexpected and wonderful turns. And I wouldn’t be able to do what I do now, if it wasn’t for the exposure that I gained to different industries and sectors along the way.

I view my career as a toolbox of skills gained through experiences. In the past, I have worked on digital transformation, I supported young companies in their internationalisation, and I was part of an agile team of software developers. These experiences, although varied, share common threads such as my passion for innovation and teamwork.

In contrast to my work in innovation, I love antiques and wandering in flea markets. A passion that I share with my kids to show them that life exists beyond the digital world. It brings balance and connection to my busy life.

To young girls who are interested in science, my message to you is: I don’t fit in any box and you don’t have to either. Being a scientist doesn’t mean limiting yourself to one role. You can use your scientific mindset to explore endless sectors and industries.
