Is our healthcare system damaging the climate?

- EN - FR
The healthcare sector protects our lives, but at what cost to the planet - In this episode of the podcast "Their research, our health", Zeynep Or, Director of Research at the Institut de recherche et documentation en économie de la santé, analyzes the environmental impact of healthcare systems and explores the avenues already at work to make them more sustainable, from professional practices to large-scale healthcare policies.

Global warming is a major threat to the health of populations and the functioning of our healthcare systems. Paradoxically, healthcare activities also have a significant impact on the environment and contribute to global warming: on a global scale, the healthcare sector is responsible for around 5% of greenhouse gas emissions.

In this episode, the "Their research, our health" podcast welcomes Zeynep Or , Director of Research at the Institut de recherche et documentation en économie de la santé. Her research focuses on international comparisons and the performance and sustainability of healthcare systems.

In the course of the conversation, she explores how healthcare systems contribute to climate change, and highlights the "green" interventions already deployed. She discusses both concrete actions by healthcare professionals and broader policies, both with healthcare providers and across healthcare systems.

How research can impact our healthcare system

"Their Research, Our Health" feeds current healthcare debates with recent scientific research findings. In each episode, economists from ULB’s Department of Applied Economics (DULBEA) exchange views with researchers to highlight recent scientific discoveries and their implications for our healthcare system.

The aim: to understand the mechanisms at work behind their results, and to draw up recommendations for public policy on the major themes that will be tomorrow’s challenges. Whether it’s the intermediate care unit, the performance of the Belgian healthcare system, the link between cancer and work, or even the effect of the environment on mental health, each episode tackles a key theme.
